I was an avid reader until I started having problems with my hands. A few friends had got Kindle's and all said how wonderful they were.

I was lucky to find a section on Martin Lewis's Money saving expert, that mentioned that Amazon sell refurbished Kindle's with full 12 month guarantee starting at £80

I had some Amazon vouchers for my birthday recently so treated myself to one at £56.

It's wonderful! really light, and with the e-ink really easy on the eyes and readable in direct sun unlike backlit screens

It's also a great space saver too, can hold around 3000 books and you can adjust the font size, so no struggling with hefty hardback tomes hen they come out now :)

When my Kindle arrived it was in a sealed box, and looked brand new, and with the 12 month guarantee I think is a great bargain

Jo. xx (loving reading again)

Here's the info from the MSE page for kindle/e-reader bargains

Amazon Warehouse, Amazon's legit outlet, sells returned refurbished items. It's currently offering both models of Kindle at a seriously reduced price.

£80, Wi-fi Kindle*, usually £111
£116, 3G & Wi-fi Kindle*, usually £152

I would love a kindle but a little bit of me is stopping me going for one. I so love our library and want to continue supporting it. I love being able to go and spend time browsing the shelves and maybe pick books that I would not always choose on line. I expect I will give in to temptation one day for the lightness and convenience if nothing else but I have to agree with Richard's original comment that there is nothing like a good old book in the hands.

I'm really confused by Kindles. I can download books on my phone - what's different about a kindle? I'd be very interested to know. xx

Hi Jo,

I too keep wondering about getting a kindle. I always have a book on the go. I usually read using a gimble, (one of Jenni's top tips!), with the book on a cushion on my knee. The gimble is no good with hard back books though, and i have tried using a book opener for hard backs but it was unsuccessful.

I may try the kindle sometime when they come down in price, i love having a new book to open but the kindle would be much easier on my hands i think.

I would have to look after it though. I lost a book, a treasured book mark with a prayer on, and a gimble, on the transport from airport to hotel on holiday!

Happy reading Jo.Smile

Hi Jean,

I popped a few books on my phone too using the kindle app. But I wasn't keen on the backlit screen before bed.

Info on the kindle's e-ink screen can be found on the Amazon page

The weight and ease of handling has made a huge difference :)

I'll bring it with me next time I see you

My Mum and sister both have Kindles and they love them. I would like one as my hands hurt when reading, which has been putting me off recently, but I love to read.

I certainly won't be getting one due to the cost and my WTC now halved due to the government cuts GRRR

Trace, with Kindle envy lol

I love my kindle too. Had it about 2 months now. I've been on holiday recently and it was great not having to carry a pile of books... especially flying with the weight limits. I could easily have it in my handbag, and hand luggage and can get it out anytime to read. No eye strain at all.

Mine is the one with 3g (bit more expensive)... which was really useful when in Corfu as you can get free access to the internet. Fairly basic software, but good enough to check air flight delays directly for yourself. I could also download an extra book through the kindle store while away.

We've been in our caravan the last 2 weeks and it was great reading in bed, so light. I've got mine in a nice purple case to protect the screen. Effortless page turning... brilliant.

I also have a kindle application on my ipod, and on my laptop. It can keep track of what page you are on, so whichever one I use, it always knows where I've got to.

My favourite facility is the fact that you can highlight sentences or paragraphs and copy them into a file called 'my clipplings', which you can then transfer onto the computer as word files. It means you can keep a record of all the important bits you want to remember. I used to highlight these with a pen on paper books (but couldn't if I borrowed them!).

If you regularly keep an eye on the amazon kindle website there are a variety of free books that come up. They are well worth downloading. At the moment one free one called Stress Proof your life, 52 brilliant ideas, was every helpful... especially for us who are told by the physios to 'pace yourself'.

Only draw back is the cost ... but maybe if you have a birthday or christmas you can persuade everyone to give you money towards one! That's what I did.

Hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather... even if it keeps raining all the time!

Anne
